The Role Working within the Department of Sociology, you will be required to contribute to the research output and to collaborate, teach, and supervise students across a range of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The Department of Sociology has a strong reputation based upon our strong emphasis on theoretically informed empirical sociology and the development of methodologically rigorous approaches to sociological issues. The Department is recognised as one of the foremost research departments in the country. An ability to teach across a range of research methods, including statistics, is required for one post. An interest in digital sociology and/or inventive methods of social investigation would also be advantageous. You will have a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant field and a developing track record of outstanding research and publications. You will possess the requisite number of high quality publications for the forthcoming REF, together with experience of teaching and supervising students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The Department The Department of Sociology has a strong reputation based upon our emphasis on theoretical sociology and the development of methodologically rigorous approaches to sociological issues. The department is recognised as one of the foremost research departments in the country. We achieved the highest rating for Sociology in RAE 2008, coming equal top in the UK, following a 6* rating in RAE 2001. It is one of the largest Sociology departments in the country, with over 30 academic staff members, together with research staff and a dynamic group of international fellows and visiting tutors. The department is currently host around 300 BA students, 80 MA students and close to 100 PhD students. It has an excellent reputation for teaching, having received the highest judgement of ‘confidence’ in the last QAA Developmental Engagement. Goldsmiths Sociology has myriad internal research and teaching links with colleagues (many of whom could also be characterized as ‘sociologists’) working in anthropology, art, computing, cultural studies, design, media and communications, politics and visual cultures.
